As much as it pains us to admit it, things look like they are done as far North as Umby. We had an epic Easter session (see above) and had high hopes about maybe getting at least this coming weekend in but alas that will not be the case. Reports from Umby yesterday morning seemed promising as ice inspect revealed at least 10" consistently at least out to the Potter Farm but the warm weather yesterday and the crazy weather we've had lately seems to have doomed Umby for the season. At the end of the day yesterday (3/31) the ice was still 10" but is now essentially water logged candle ice. Highly unstable and carries a high risk of going swimming regardless of ice thickness. See the video below if you are unfamiliar with candle ice. It is probably one of the most hazardous elements we encounter in lake kiting. Surely the most deceptive. What can one say? We had a pretty short and strange season to say the least. Still, we had a number of really quality days with some great students and clients. Not to mention some great sessions with all of our Hardwater Kiting friends. Next year hopefully will be better but for the worst year we've seen in the last 15 seasons, this year wasn't all bad. Thanks for playing and we will see you all again next season!!!

WARNING. No ice is ever 100% safe. We offer condition reports as a service to our students and clients who are familiar with the area and as a source of general condition information to others. These reports are not intended to replace common sense or up to the minute first hand knowledge of a given area. Nor is it a substitute for common sense. When in doubt don't go out.
