First report of 2017/18 season

Chocorua
To say we have riding may be a little premature but we have been out.  Locally Lake Chocorua has set up and averages between 4 and 5" of clean grey ice with thinner patches located beneath the snow areas.  The surface is fairly smooth but wavy in places. You definitely want to have a sharp edge otherwise don't even bother.

We've been riding the Green Thumb properties but there isn't any base so if you edge too aggressively, you're going to hit dirt and rocks.  Powder skis and flat turns are the recipe for having fun over there.

Please remember if you want to access the Green Thumb properties you MUST have a land user permit issued by them.  This means going to the office, introducing yourself and filling out the proper forms.  This needs to be renewed each season.

We scouted a few spots over the weekend down south. Squam is well on it's way to setting up and seems to be on the same schedule as last season.  Many of Winne's smaller coves and bays are setting up as well.

Umby and Jericho are frozen up north. Jericho was a bit beat up last time I was there and a little warm up will do it some good.  Umby had a few thin areas the other day and probably will not be 100% until Christmas or beyond.  We rode the entire lake last year on Christmas.  Maybe we'll get it again this year!

WARNING.  No ice is ever 100% safe.  We offer condition reports as a service to our students and clients who are familiar with the area and as a source of general condition information to others.  These reports are not intended to replace common sense or up to the minute first hand knowledge of a given area. Nor is it a substitute for common sense. When in doubt don't go out.
